Chapter 11

Superman Must Be Destroyed!

Lex Luthor as Existentialist Anti-Hero

Sarah K. Donovan and Nicholas Richardson

Lex Luthor despises Superman. He obsesses about Superman. He tries to kill Superman. At first glance, Luthor seems like a one-dimensional character: a demented criminal mastermind. What else would explain his profound hatred of the “perfect boy scout?” (We’ll ignore the issue of hair loss.) But a closer look through the lens of existentialism can help us to see that Luthor is actually a complex, self-determined person who grapples with legitimate concerns regarding Superman. Luthor takes existentialism to the extreme, though, rejecting ethics and becoming an anti-hero.
